At present this department includes 65 beds for in-patients, a diagnostic room, an orthoptic room, a surgery block, and an outpatients’ section. Every year approximately 6,000 children from all over the region as well as about 2,400 little patients from other regions of Ukraine receive integrated treatment, outpatient care and consultations in stationary conditions. 600 operations are performed annually. 70% of the children that undergo treatment are rural residents. 1,400 children are consulted by the mobile clinic specialists in the remote areas of the region. Only women work in the department: 10 doctors-ophthalmologists, 12 nurses and 16 sanitary women. The surgery block in the department is of particular importance. It consists of operating theatre, a high-dependency unit and recovery rooms. The sanitary condition of the block did not meet modern requirements. The renovation was extremely necessary in order to provide the patients and the personnel with comfortable conditions. For this purpose the premises were repaired and the furniture changed. The medical cases, tables for instruments, mobile medical chairs were obtained for the operational theater and the recovery rooms were refurbished completely. As a result, the conditions of staying improved greatly both for the children and the personnel which positively influenced the recovery of patients after operations. The surgery unit was recognized the best among the children’s hospitals in the region.
